Lee

H. D. Lee Mercantile Co. was founded by Harry David Lee in 1889.
He dealt in food between Kansas City and Denver.
The business prospered.
He introduced haberdashery, furniture, stationery and school supplies.
In 1912 he opened a plant in Salina (Kansas) to make durable workwear.
The next year brought out a new product, the famous jeanswear Lee Union-All,
one-piece denim coverall as a garment for work.
On the 6th of April 1917 the United States declared war on Germany.
H. D. Lee Mercantile Co. was manufacturing denim clothing for soldiers.
In 1943 it was renamed H. D. Lee Co. Incorporated.
The Company still exists today under this registered name, as a subsidiary of VF Corporation.
VF Corporation has acquired H. D. Lee Co. Inc in 1969.
